David Moyes has told out of favour striker James Beattie he has a battle on his hands to regain his first-team place at Everton.
The arrival of Andy Johnson in the summer from Crystal Palace has seen the former Southampton hit-man fall down the pecking order at Goodison Park.
Beattie has often been used as a substitute this season and Moyes has informed the ex-England striker he has plenty of options at his disposal.
"James seems alright, he's training fine and getting on with his work," stated Moyes.
"Of course, he wants to play and that's the way we want him. But there's a lot of competition up front.
"One of the positions we're strong in is centre-forward. We have Victor (Anichebe), James Vaughan, James McFadden and Andrew Johnson."
