James Beattie has been handed a timely boost after X-rays revealed he did not break his foot on Saturday.

The powerful striker limped out of Everton's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the early stages and there were fears he had fractured his foot.

Everton kept Beattie under wraps for 36 hours before sending him for an X-ray and, much to the player's relief, the result was positive.

Beattie sustained heavy bruising and will be sidelined for a fortnight, but the diagnosis could have been far worse.

"James went for a pre-cautionary x-ray that has revealed no fracture," Head Physio Mick Rathbone told the club's website.

"He has badly sprained his toe joint and we anticipate that it could be some weeks before he is fit to play again."
