Moyes backs Beattie

David Moyes has backed James Beattie to show his worth for Everton.

David Moyes has backed James Beattie to show his worth for Everton.

The former Southampton star was brought in for £6.5 million but has yet to rediscover the form that took him into the England squad.

However, Moyes believes that Beattie will show the Toffees' supporters that he is worth every penny now he has adapted to a new club.

"We are looking for a big season from James," confirmed Moyes.

"He's had a good goalscoring record in The Premiership prior to joining Everton, so I don't see why that should change.

"It was a difficult first year for him, and we can put that down to many things.

"But it's time for him to stand on his own two feet and, hopefully, come up with the goods."

Beattie admits that he has a point to prove, but thanks the fans and his manager for not turning on him.

"If things had gone wrong for Everton last season, I suppose I could have been blamed but the good thing about football is that you always get another chance to put it right," said Beattie.

"I had a difficult time to start with but I have never doubted my own ability. The manager stood by me, and so did the fans.

"There is no middle road in football these days but I know people around the club want me to do well and hopefully I will contribute to another good season."
