The injury casts a doubt over McNamee's future with the player out of contract in the summer and a number of clubs keen to sign him prior to the knock.
Livingston chief executive Vivien Kyles insists the club will stand by McNamee even though his contract expires in the summer.
"We will be doing everything we can to help him during his rehab and that includes attending to his contract," Kyles told the club's official website.
"We have been discussing his situation in any case.
"It is important that David concentrates on recovering and getting back into football, rather than worrying about his contract.
"He is a popular player at Livingston, with fans and fellow-professionals alike, and we all want him to recover quickly from this setback."
The injury means McNamee will miss next month's World Cup qualifying double header against Moldova and Belarus.
McNamee, who was named in the squad last week, joins Everton's Gary Naysmith in withdrawing from the squad through injury.
Scotland boss Walter Smith is now likely to turn to Graham Alexander to play in defence in the absence of McNamee and Naysmith.
"Gary saw a specialist about an ankle injury in midweek and I then got a call from the Everton physio to tell me he would be out," said Smith.
"We have Graham Alexander back in, however, and, although he is a right-back, it means Jackie McNamara can perhaps operate on the left as he often has done in the past.
"He's an experienced player and, to have a season like he's having, you'd be happy to bring him back in."
