Skysports.com understands that Everton have shelved their interest in Marseille midfielder Mathieu Flamini after learning of the compensation fee for his services.

Flamini is free to leave Marseille as he has still to sign his first professional contract at Stade Velodrome and the club had warned him they would not be held to ransom to keep him.

But under Fifa rules Marseille are entitled to compensation for the player as he is under 24 years of age.

Everton and other interested clubs were informed that Flamini's compensation package would only be in the region of ‚é¼300,000 (£200,000).

But Fifa have ruled that any club looking to sign Flamini would have to fork out a figure in the region of ‚é¼4 million (£3 million) to take him from Marseille.

French rules also state a player must sign his first professional contract with the club he was trained at.

As a result Everton have now cooled their interest in the French Under-21 international.

Charlton are also thought to be keen on the player, but it is not known whether or not they will be willing to meet the compensation figure to bring him to The Valley.
