Everton have confirmed that Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane has undergone a successful operation to cure a troublesome ankle injury which ruled him out of the close of last season.

Wideman Kilbane was in surgery on Thursday and club physio Mick Rathbone has confirmed that the operation was a success.

It is now expected that Kilbane will need a rehabilitation period of up to six weeks but is likely to be declared fit to return for pre-season training with the rest of the squad.

''Everything went well for Kevin,'' confirmed Rathbone.

''The surgeon removed a piece of bone from his ankle and we are hopeful that this will now sort the problem out.

''Kevin is on crutches for a couple of days and we will review everything on Monday morning.

''We are confident that he will be there or thereabouts when pre-season training starts.''
