GARY NAYSMITH'S season would appear to be over after he suffered complications in his attempt to return from an ankle injury he suffered during The Toffees' 2-1 win over Crewe in the FA Cup.

At first it appeared that the Scottish defender had picked up an orthodox strained ligament injury but now manager David Moyes has admitted that it is 'unlikely' that Naysmith will be ready to start the 2002-03 season.

Naysmith had an operation in March on the ankle, but is still feeling pain in it and he has been ordered to rest with the threat of a second time under the surgeon's knife a distinct possibility.

Moyes said: "Gary is still not happy with the ankle after his operation.

"We had originally hoped to have him back for the start of pre-season training, but that's looking unlikely now.

"We'll have to be guided by the surgeon but it's disappointing."
