Berti Vogts has drafted Caldwell into the Scottish squad for the past two games and although France humbled them 5-0 in Paris, the central defender did enough to impress.
Caldwell's stock in Scotland has obviously risen, with The Bhoys getting the chance to see him play week in and week out, and his international career is just getting started.
Although Hibs have been impressed by the play of the 19-year-old, it is believed they would struggle to finance a deal for him.
Everton have also been alerted to Caldwell's availability and are set to rival Martin O'Neill's side for his signature.
Yet, Magpies manager Bobby Robson will also have kept track of Caldwell and in the run-in to the end of the season it has become apparent that Newcastle are in need of a dominant defender at the back as Nikos Dabizas's run of poor form and the increased pressure on the team has seen them turn in a couple of disappointing performances.
This could see Caldwell given another opportunity at St James' Park and as he is still a teenager, he has a number of years to impress, although it is believed he is looking for increased personal terms.
