ACCORDING to sources in Italy, Everton are in the frame to sign Inter Milan defender Cyril Domoraud.

The 29-year-old, has been told he can leave the San Siro by coach Marcello Lippi and Walter Smith is believed to have made contact with the player.

But the Merseysiders face some stiff competition with Spanish side Celta Vigo the main rivals.

The Ivory Coast international has a French passport, so would not require a work-permit, and could be tempted by a move to the Premiership, but the la Liga outfit have the added bonus of being able to offer him Uefa Cup football.

Smith is looking to bolster his back-line after losing veteran Richard Gough to injury and the former Bordeaux and Marseille ace fits the bill.

Despite the reports Toffees boss Walter Smith denied knowing anything about the player, saying: "I don't know where that report has come from at all," said Smith. "I don't know anything about the player and I couldn't honestly tell you where he is. So, that one is purely speculation on someone's part.

"I think when you have got a lot of injuries, people assume you will go out and get another player.

"That is not the case at the present moment, so the speculative piece wherever it has appeared is totally wrong."
