BLUES CRISIS AVERTED AS MYHRE SIGNS

BIRMINGHAM boss Trevor Francis has averted a goalkeeping crisis at the last minute, by signing Everton keeper Thomas Myhre on loan.

Blues received special dispensation from the Football League to bring a loan signing into the club, even though the transfer deadline passed last week. Injuries to both Ian Bennett and Kevin Poole forced Francis to ask for the club to be treated as a special case.

Francis had even considered playing defender Darren Purse in goal in Saturday`s crunch fixture with Wolves, such was his desperation.

"The obvious replacement for Ian would have been Kevin, but he is very doubtful and we don`t have any other professional keepers, just two 16-year-old kids and they are not an option," he said.

However, the move for Myhre has been rubber-stamped in time for the Norwegian to boost his hopes of playing for Norway in Euro 2000, by obtaining regular first team football at St Andrews.

The Norseman had been involved in controversy at Goodison after being left out of the squad completely last week, despite the fact that he was number one for his country, on Wednesday, against Switzerland.
