Emirates Stadium not the next destination for Ghana international

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he is not planning to sign Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah. Wenger has been linked with a move for Appiah, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Fenerbahce. Premier League rivals Portsmouth and West Ham have confirmed an interest in Appiah, but Wenger will not be making a bid. When asked if he held an interest in the 27-year-old, Wenger replied: "No, we are not on the case."

Not down to money

A holding midfielder was rumoured to be Wenger's priority over the summer after Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva left Emirates Stadium. Liverpool's Xabi Alonso and Rennes' Stephane M'Bia were reported targets, with Wenger admitting finances were not a factor behind his failure to reinforce his squad. He added: "It was not just down to money. "With some players, their clubs said they would not be ready to sell the player. That is the basic rule of the game."
