Squillaci called in as cover

France have called up Sebastien Squillaci as cover for Arsenal defender William Gallas.

France coach Raymond Domenech has called up Sebastien Squillaci to his squad as cover for Arsenal defender William Gallas.

Gallas is currently struggling with a hamstring strain and is a doubt to play against Scotland on Saturday, live on Sky Sports 1.

The former Chelsea stopper is to undergo a fitness test on Thursday to establish whether he will be able to play in their Euro 2008 qualifier.

Should Gallas drop out then Lyon defender Squillaci will step into the void created by the experienced Gunners defender.

"We will take a decision on Thursday afternoon to see whether I can play on Saturday," Gallas told L'Equipe.

"I will test myself with the ball and do some light jogging. I can always play with protection but there is a risk.

"I always want to play in these matches but if I injure myself again and am ruled out for a month it would be a pity."

Meanwhile, Gallas believes Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka deserves his recall to the national team.

"He deserved to be called, because he never gave up hope of being selected," he told AFP.

"It is a reward for all his efforts. He is mentally strong and declared a few weeks ago he wanted to be Bleu.

"He knows a couple of Bolton players and for the moment, they're playing well, they are a surprise. He can open out with Bolton.

"People have told me he was feeling very good at the moment. I think he is more mature."
