Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that William Gallas could be set to fill the left back slot vacated by Ashley Cole.
The 29-year-old joined The Gunners from Chelsea last week as Cole moved in the opposite direction, and his versatility makes him an ideal candidate for the left back position.
Justin Hoyte has occupied the role so far this season but he is naturally a right-sided player.
With Gael Clichy still sidelined Wenger could therefore decide to throw Gallas, who has yet to play in The Premiership this term, straight into the position for the game against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
However, matters have been complicated further by Johan Djourou returning from Switzerland Under-21 duty with a shoulder injury.
"Gallas can play in different positions at the back and that is what we need," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.
"He is used to The Premiership, he knows what it is all about and what it is to go to difficult places. That is why I am happy to have him.
"He can play left back and there is a possibility he may play there (on Saturday).
"At the moment we have a problem there. Justin Hoyte prefers to play at right back, so Gallas is the most capable to sort that out."
"He could play (there), but I do not know yet. Djourou came back injured, Hoyte had a difficult game yesterday. I will assess it on Friday morning."
Apart from Djourou, Wenger was relieved to see his international players return from midweek action injury-free.
"Apart from knocks and bruises from international games which were more or less difficult, nobody else is out," he confirmed.
