Jose Antonio Reyes was full of praise for Fernando Torres after the pair combined to keep Spain's automatic qualification hopes alive with victory over Belgium.

The Arsenal forward was praised in the Spanish press for having an immediate impact after coming on as a second-half substitute to supply Torres with both goals, but he wanted to give all the credit to the Atletico Madrid star.

"Torres must take the credit," said Reyes. "He connected very well with the cross because, good though it may have been, it was still a difficult finish."

After netting the brace, Torres was delighted to have finally answered his critics only weeks after being jeered by the Spain fans, as the team failed to impress in home games against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia & Montenegro.

"I needed to have a good game," he said. "To score those goals has lifted a big weight off me that had built up over the past few matches.

"I was not playing well and was anxious to score and I was making myself worse. I always gain confidence from scoring.

"But I am always positive. I have heard the critics, both the good ones and, lately, the bad ones, and they can help me.

"I use them when I play because I learn from the bad ones and use the good ones to inspire me. From now on, I will learn from my mistakes.

"I hope not to commit any more errors though and hope that the comments improve."

Spain must win by four goals in San Marino on Wednesday and hope that Serbia & Montenegro fail to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina to avoid having to go into the play-offs.
