Arsenal's Gael Clichy believes he is ready for regular first-team football at Highbury.

The young French full back has been Ashley Cole's understudy over recent years, but the former Cannes stopper is now prepared for the next level.

Clichy, who penned a new contract back in July, is looking to feature more under Arsene Wenger and is eager to take his chance when it arrives.

"Every season I'm here to progress, and now I'm ready to play as first choice," said Clichy. "I want to play more.

"It's nice to have someone like Ashley in front of me, so I can try to catch him up every time.

"We need this competition in the squad to help all the players progress. I'm ready to be the number one.

"I'm proud to sign a new deal. Hopefully I'll be here for another five years - I'm just waiting for my chance."
