Arsene Wenger has come out in support of young star Jose Antonio Reyes.Arsene Wenger has come out in support of young star Jose Antonio Reyes, and insisted that the former Sevilla man would prove himself in North London.
Wenger has repeatedly stated he has a mission to transform the 21-year-old into one of world football's most feared forwards, although Reyes has been heavily linked with a move back to Spain in the summer.
Real Madrid have a long-standing interest, and the player himself was duped into a radio hoax in February where he admitted a desire to play for Los Merengues.
The Spaniard has displayed glimpses of his obvious talent since joining last January for £10.5 million, most notably at the start of this season when he recorded six goals in his first six appearances.
However he has been unable to replicate the form that saw him set La Liga alight with a series of dazzling displays, although impressed in the recent Premiership fixture against Blackburn Rovers.
The Gunners boss believes that Reyes has a bright future in North London, and, despite his modest goal return to date, is sure that he can make a big impression in The Premiership.
"I feel I have to persist with him. This guy has so much talent and is still so young," said Wenger.
"With that big a transfer fee people expect you to give them your best straight away. They forget he is only 21-years-old.
"For me he is coming back to his best. He shows that in training and he was very mobile and dangerous at Blackburn."
