ARSENAL are rumoured to be ready to increase their bid for Italian goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, following Rami Shaaban's injury.

The Gunners were linked with Antonioli in the past, but there are suggestions that a fresh bid has been necessitated by circumstance.

Shaaban's broken leg will keep him out for some time, and experienced cover is needed for veteran David Seaman.

However, Antonioli has long insisted he does not wish to leave Giallorossi, and it seems that only the arrival of long-term Roma target Mikael Landreau will prompt a change of heart.

Antonioli is currently finding himself battling with young Italian international Ivan Pelizzoli for the number one jersey - and Fabio Capello looks more likely to stick with the latter.

Antonioli has never been a popular figure in the Italian press, but was one of the undisputed stars of Roma's title winning campaign in 2000/01.
