BARCELONA'S new coach, Carles Rexach, is believed to have met with president Joan Gaspart to highlight a list of six players the team requires to get them back on track.

This season has been a veritable disaster for Barca, culminating in the sacking of Llorenc Serra Ferrer, and it appears the players wanted by the team have been long-term targets.

To address the defensive frailties of the side, Feyenoord keeper Jerzy Dudek and Spurs centre back Sol Campbell (pictured) are pinpointed to give the team a stronger backbone.

The plethora of clubs tracking Campbell increases as he continues to negotiate over a new deal at White Hart Lane, although the arrival of Glenn Hoddle would seem to indicate Tottenham remain favourites to keep the England defender.

Cristian Chivu, the Romanian full back that tormented England during Euro 2000, has been targeted as not only do Barca lack central defensive cover but also need width at the back.

Juan Roman Riquelme is close to moving to Camp Nou from Boca Juniors, the two clubs having agreed terms over the deal which will give Barca an exciting option in midfield and on the wings.

Monaco man Philippe Christanval is possibly a fall-back in case Barca do not get Campbell, while Fabio Rochembach is another wide man, perhaps in case they fail to land Chivu.

Christanval is also capable of playing as a sweeper, a position Campbell could fill eventually, allowing him to flourish with his rampaging forward runs.

Serginho and Silvinho, of Milan and Arsenal respectively, have also been mentioned as possible alternatives for the wing back position, although neither side is likely to let their player leave without a fight.

Edwin van der Sar and Gianluigi Buffon have been mentioned as possible goalkeeping options, although Polish star Dudek, who has impressed in his four seasons with Feyenoord, is top of Barca's list.
