Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho absent for Liverpool at Besiktas

Liverpool will be without Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson for their Europa League last-32 second-leg tie with Besiktas in Istanbul.

Brazilian playmaker Coutinho, who trained at Melwood on Wednesday morning, has been rested by manager Brendan Rodgers after making 19 starts in a row since December.

Meanwhile, stand-in skipper Henderson has been ruled out with a minor ankle injury but is expected to be fit for their crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City - live on Sky Sports on Sunday.

The Reds are already missing club captain Steven Gerrard as he continues his rehabilitation following a hamstring injury while Lazar Markovic serves the second of a four game European ban following his red card against Basel.

Lucas (thigh), Mamadou Sakho (hip), Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan (both knee) and Glen Johnson (illness) have all been ruled out.

Defender Martin Skrtel is likely to captain Liverpool as they return to the Ataturk Stadium aiming to protect a 1-0 lead from the first leg after striker Mario Balotelli scored a late penalty.

Rodgers could bring Wales U21 international Jordan Williams into the first-team fold.

The 19-year-old has played just one game for the club in the Capital One cup victory over Middlesbrough earlier in the season.

Academy youngsters Jermone Sinclair, Cameron Brannagan, Jordan Lussey and Ryan Fulton have also been added to the squad.
