Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert has turned down a deadline day move to Aston Villa, Sky sources understand.

The 32-year-old, who only moved to Anfield from Southampton last summer, is believed to have been told he could move to Villa Park after the clubs agreed a £5million fee for his transfer.

Lambert scored 14 times for Saints last season but has failed to replicate that form for Liverpool, scoring just three times this term, including one against Villa last month.

However, the England international is known to be a boyhood Livepool supporter and is desperate to prove he is worthy of a place as the club's No 9.

Lambert rose through the football leagues Southampton, playing for the south coast club in League One, the Championship, and the Premier League.
