Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra shook hands before an emotional meeting between great rivals Liverpool and Manchester United.

Widespread signs of respect before kick-off at Anfield

Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra shook hands before an emotional meeting between great rivals Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. It had been hoped the pair would make the gesture in a show of unity as Liverpool played their first game at Anfield since the Hillsborough Independent Panel absolved supporters of any blame in the 1989 stadium disaster, which took the lives of 96 Reds fans. Liverpool forward Suarez refused to shake United defender Evra's hand in the league meeting between the sides at Old Trafford in February, having previously been found guilty of racially abusing the Frenchman in the corresponding fixture at Anfield last season. But the handshake took place amid widespread positive signs of respect before kick-off at Anfield. United players wore tracksuit tops with the number 96 on the back and respective club managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Brendan Rodgers took part in a combined pre-match interview with Sky Sports. Before kick-off, Liverpool fans held up cards to form a mosaic around Anfield which read 'truth' and 'justice'.
