Fabio Borini: Has previously worked with Brendan Rodgers at Chelsea and Swansea
Roma's sporting director Walter Sabatini has confirmed that Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing Fabio Borini.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers revealed on Monday that he was close to completing one piece of transfer business, and Borini was said to be the man in his sights.
The Italy international worked under Rodgers during his time in Chelsea's academy system and during a loan spell at Swansea.
Rodgers believes the talented 21-year-old would bring something different to his attacking ranks at Anfield, and Roma admit transfer talks are ongoing.
"There is a real interest shown by Liverpool for Borini," said Sabatini.
"We are evaluating the situation with (Roma general manager) Franco (Baldini)."
Roma only acquired the full rights to Borini's contract in June, after buying Serie A rivals Parma out of a joint-ownership agreement.
They were prepared to part with £3.95million after seeing the youngster net nine goals in 24 league appearances last season and earn himself a place in Italy's Euro 2012 squad.
Roma are, however, willing to discuss a deal with Liverpool as they are keen to snap up highly-rated Siena striker Mattia Destro and could use the funds generated from the sale of Borini to make a move happen.
"We have been monitoring Destro's situation," Sabatini said.
"We are on alert. We are neither in nor out."
