Welsh forward delighted to be involved in Olympic squad

Craig Bellamy is delighted to be involved with the Team GB football team and is reluctant to be drawn into a debate regarding squad selection. For a long time it appeared as though the British side for the 2012 Olympics would be made up entirely of Englishmen, with the authorities in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland reluctant to get involved. As it is, five Welshmen have been included in Stuart Pearce's 18-man party. Bellamy has made the grade as one of three over-age players and is not interested in the politics surrounding the make-up of the side. "I am just happy to be involved in this and to have this opportunity," said the Liverpool forward. "I would have always loved to be involved in this and how could you not?

"I have not heard anything elsewhere. I am not about politics, I am just here to play football. "I love playing football and my family really wanted me to do this so I am just looking forward to it." Bellamy will line up in London alongside fellow countryman Ryan Giggs, with the veteran Manchester United midfielder having been appointed skipper of Team GB. "He is probably one of the best players who has ever played the game," said Bellamy. "It is fitting he is captain and also I have been very fortunate to play with him for my country as well, so I know Ryan quite well. "It is very fitting he is captain and is here."
