Rafa Benitez has been backed by 28 per cent of skysports.com readers for a sensational return to Anfield.

Readers reckon former boss might be in the frame

Rafa Benitez has been backed by 28 per cent of skysports.com readers for a sensational return to Anfield after Kenny Dalglish was axed by Liverpool on Wednesday. Benitez has been out of work since an ill-fated stint at Inter Milan in 2010 and has been a popular choice with supporters so far, despite also being linked to the vacant manager's position at Aston Villa. Pep Guardiola recently stepped down from the Barcelona job after three trophy-laden years at the Nou Camp and he earned 24 per cent of the readers' vote. Whether the Spanish maestro would return to management so soon after deciding to take a breather from the high-pressure position at the Catalan giants remains to be seen, but the bookmakers are not so sure, with Sky Bet offering 9/1 for him to take the reins. The online betting company has Andre Villas-Boas as the 13/8 favourite ahead of en vogue Wigan boss Roberto Martinez (5/1) who has been heavily linked with a move away from the DW Stadium. Villas-Boas polled 13 per cent of the vote ahead of Roberto Di Matteo (12 per cent), but punters have been putting their money behind the former Chelsea boss, while the current incumbent is an outside bet at 25/1.

Rodgers

Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers is 10/1 with the online betting company to make the move to Liverpool, but is well down the pecking order in terms of popularity - polling just six per cent. Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: "We've been mainly seeing money for AVB as punters seem to think he could be a long-term solution, despite his issues at Chelsea. "It looks as though people have recognised that he had a very difficult task on his hands. "Sky Bet customers also hold a high opinion for Martinez following his fine work at Wigan, while Benitez's links with the club and availability make him an obvious option."
