Anfield boss at a loss to explain how side suffered defeat

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish refused to accept that defeat by Arsenal ended his club's hopes of a place in the Premier League's top four. Robin van Persie's brilliance meant the Anfield outfit suffered a first home defeat of the season after a 2-1 loss on Saturday lunchtime. In a story of their season, Liverpool were guilty of wasting chances and they twice hit the post and Dirk Kuyt saw a first-half penalty saved by Wojciech Szczesny. The defeat leaves the Carling Cup winners 10 points behind the UEFA Champions League places. But Dalglish told Sky Sports 2 HD: "We keep going. As I've said before, we'll add the points up at the end of the season and see where we finish up."

Difficult

The Reds created the majority of the first-half chances and took the lead through Laurent Koscielny's own goal. But Van Persie scored twice, the second coming deep into eight minutes of stoppage-time before the final whistle after Mikel Arteta had suffered concussion earlier in the second half. And Dalglish was at a loss to explain how his side had not taken at least a point from their eventual defeat. "It's difficult for anybody to believe," he said. "We played some fantastic stuff and came away with nothing. "I think it's rewarding to play a team like Arsenal and play as well as we have done, being so dominant in the first half. The scoreline doesn't really reflect the game. "We were beaten because we didn't score enough goals. Van Persie's a fantastic footballer, no doubt about that. But we did enough to win that game."
