New Reds owner proud to take charge of Liverpool

Liverpool owner John Henry insists "We're here to win" after completing his takeover of the club. Henry's NESV group finally completed their £300million takeover of the Reds after a week of twists surrounding the ownership of the club. Liverpool's board agreed a takeover deal with Henry, who also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, last week, but the move was held up by American duo Tom Hicks and George Gillett's opposition to the sale Former co-owners Hicks and Gillett lifted the final obstacle standing in NESV's way by removing the restraining order they won in a Texas court to block the proposed sale after finally admitting defeat in their bid to keep hold of the club. Henry admitted he was proud to take charge of Liverpool, but refused to set any targets for the new owners.

Proud

"I am proud and humbled," said Henry. "We have a lot of work to do and I cannot tell you how happy I am to have finally got the deal done." Asked how much the deal is worth, Henry added: "I have actually no idea what the deal is worth. It depends on what day it is. "We're not going to have a lot to say, our actions will hopefully speak for us. "We are going to do a lot of listening and we have a lot to learn. "It's too early to say what we're going to do but we're here to win, we have a tradition of winning - we (the Boston Red Sox) are the second-highest spending club in Major League Baseball and we're here to win, we will do whatever is necessary." Henry admitted he will not attend Sunday's Merseyside derby away to Everton preferring his first experience of being Liverpool owner to be at Anfield.
Justice
He said: "I think it's better for our first experience with the supporters to be at home." Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton believes the takeover was worth the wait after a week of protracted negotiations and court visits. "As every Liverpool fan knows, the most nerve-wracking way to win a match is in a penalty shoot-out but in the end, as long as you get the right result, it is worth the wait. And we have got the right result," insisted Broughton. "It's been pretty stressful but I think we've been confident all the way through that we would get there. "We've always known we were doing the right things, that we would get justice, and I think exactly what we got in the end was justice." Broughton also confirmed he would stay on in "a transitional role" for the early stages of Henry's stewardship of the club.
