Striker not interested in purported move to Newcastle

Luis Garcia insists he is not interested in leaving Espanyol after being linked with a move to Newcastle United. Reports have claimed that the Magpies are considering a bid to bring the forward to the Premier League in January. But the 26-year-old has shunned talk of a switch to St James' Park as he wants to help Espanyol to build on a promising start to the season. "I believe that selling players in the winter market will be a big mistake after keeping the squad in the summer," Garcia told the Spanish press.

Very happy

"I am very happy with the club because we are working to become a big club and, to achieve this objective, it is obligatory to stay with the same setup." Garcia's Espanyol team-mates Daniel Jarque and Albert Riera have also been linked with a January transfer, with Tottenham rumoured to be showing an interest. However, Garcia was keen to point out that there has been no contact with other clubs following the speculation in the media. He added: "In the press there are many rumours that appear, but we have not spoken with anybody."
