Anthony Le Tallec claims Hearts offered him 'crazy money' to move to Tynecastle before the close of the transfer window.
The Liverpool attacker joined Le Mans on a season-long loan last week, having also been given the opportunity to head to Scotland.
Le Tallec says Hearts' offer was the more financially lucrative, but he wanted to return to France for 'sporting' reasons.
"I was all set to leave for Scotland and join Hearts on August 31, but I got a phone call from Le Mans' coach Rudi Garcia and I liked what he had to say," Le Tallec told Football365.fr.
"Was I tempted to go to Scotland? I preferred to favour the sporting perspective and I've proved it by joining Le Mans.
"Had I gone to Scotland it would have been for another reason. From the financial point of view, Hearts were offering me crazy money.
"But I'm not thinking about the money. I want to put myself in the shop window and I'll get plenty of publicity at Le Mans."
The former France Under 21 international has barely featured for Liverpool since Rafa Benitez took over as manager, and has also been on loan at St Etienne, Sunderland and Sochaux.
