Steve Staunton is optimistic Steve Finnan will be fit for Republic of Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifier with Slovakia on Saturday.
Finnan is struggling with a knee injury picked up in Liverpool's 6-0 thrashing of Derby County at the weekend.
The right-back was unable to train on Tuesday, but Ireland coach Staunton is staying upbeat about having Finnan available.
"With Steve Finnan we're taking him day by day," said Staunton. "He opened up the joint, but he's had it before.
"We are hopeful for the weekend."
Paul McShane is another injury concern for Ireland, but Staunton expects the Sunderland defender to overcome a shoulder problem.
Staunton added: "Paul has had a problem for a week or so.
"He has done his fitness work and that is all he has to do."
