Provett rejected an offer of a new deal at Victoria Park towards the end of last season and and is believed to be close to signing for the League Two side.
The 24-year-old, was kept out of the Pools side last season by Dimi Konstantopolous, is understood to want regular first-team football.
Meanwhile, Liverpool youngsters Jay Smith and Jimmy Ryan will start pre-season at Gigg Lane.
The midfield duo, who have both played for the Premiership club's reserve team, may be offered loan deals by the Shakers if they impress boss Chris Casper .
