Czech Republic star Vladimir Smicer is closing in on a first-team return for Bordeaux, but he is not yet fit enough to face former club Liverpool on Wednesday.
Smicer had a fine six-year spell at Anfield and was keen to make his comeback from injury in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League encounter with The Reds.
He is not yet ready for first-team football, but will be an interested spectator at Stade Chaban-Delmas.
"My injury is not grave anymore, I just need a few days to rest," Smicer told skysports.com.
"I am happy because I will meet my former team-mates again and shake hands with them. But the pleasure comes from the pitch. I am going to miss it."
Smicer has set his sights on featuring in the return encounter.
"I hope to play the next match at Anfield, to experience another time this atmosphere that has touched me," he stated.
"After having spent six seasons with Liverpool, the possibility to play against them may not happen again."
