Rennes are closing in on the signing of former Birmingham defender Mario Melchiot.
Melchiot is available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at St Andrews.
A number of clubs have been linked with the Dutchman, but Rennes have jumped to the head of the queue for his signature.
Reports emanating from France suggest a deal could be close to being concluded with the player having passed a medical and agreed personal terms.
Rennes are thought to have offered Melchiot a one-year deal and the move could be announced by the end of the week.
The French side are believed to have targeted Liverpool's Jan Kromkamp as an alternative to Melchiot should they fail to seal a deal for the Dutchman.
Meanwhile, Rennes are also hoping to sign Fabien Barthez.
Barthez is a free agent after leaving Marseille at the end of last season.
Rennes could be in the market for a new goalkeeper with doubts continuing to surround the long-term future of Andreas Isaksson.
Rennes boss Pierre Dreossi is thought to have contacted Barthez's agent about a possible move should Isaksson move on.
Toulouse are also chasing Barthez and they would rival any bid from Rennes for the former Manchester United star.
