Anthony Le Tallec has been ruled out of the remainder of France's European under-21 championship because of a groin injury.
The Liverpool ace was struggling before the start of the tournament with the problem and missed France's first two matches.
The 21-year-old played against Serbia & Montenegro on Sunday but suffered a recurrence of the injury in training on Wednesday.
French under-21 coach Rene Girard believes the striker must undergo surgery to cure the ongoing problem but does not regret taking Le Tallec to the finals.
"It was a gamble and we don't have any regrets," Girard said.
"The match against Serbia was a test, three days ago he was fine, but it didn't hold.
"Now he must take responsibility for himself, he has had this groin problem for four or five months and played under injections.
"Maybe he should consider surgery. Anthony is at the moment at 40 percent physically and 30 percent in his mind."
Le Tallec is keen to leave Liverpool this summer and will be hoping the injury does not scupper his plans of a move back to France.
