Bolton boss Sam Allardyce admits he is fighting a losing battle as he bids to land Deportivo La Coruna defender Cesar before the deadline.

The Trotters chief has made no secret of his admiration for the powerful stopper but has encountered difficulties in finalising a deal for the player.

Liverpool, Newcastle and Birmingham have also been credited with an interest in the 28-year-old although reports from Spain insist Bolton remain favourites for his signature.

However, Allardyce has now revealed that talks for the Spaniard have hit something of an impasse and is pessimistic about the possibility of concluding a deal before the window slams shut.

"I would like to sign Cesar but there have been difficulties with negotiations," he told Bolton's official website.

"It is unlikely, but I will keep trying to make it happen before the month is out."

The player's contract with Depor expires at the end of the season so Allardyce might well have to end up waiting until the summer before getting his man.
