Millwall have extended the loan of Liverpool defender Zak Whitbread for the rest of the season.

The American-born player, who turns 22 next week, has impressed the Championship side since arriving on loan at The Den back in November.

Whitbread has made seven appearances for The Lions to this stage and Liverpool have granted the South East London club permission to play the youngster against their Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round.

Millwall caretaker boss Dave Tuttle was pleased to keep the defender for the rest of the season.

"I'm pleased that Zak has joined us for the remainder of the season, and I would like to thank Liverpool for allowing him to do so," Tuttle told the club's official website.

"Zak has really made an important contribution for us and I'm hoping that he will continue to do so over the next months."

One player that has ended his Millwall loan is striker Bruce Dyer, who has returned to parent club Stoke City after a two-month spell.
