Liverpool's Antonio Barragan has been sidelined for between five and six weeks due to injury.

The 18-year-old Spanish defender underwent keyhole surgery on Thursday in a bid to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

Barragan has made just once appearance for manager Rafael Benitez - a substitute outing in The Reds' UEFA Champions League tie against CSKA Sofia - since joining from Sevilla in the summer.

While a regular in the reserves, the setback is a major blow to the player's hopes of carving out a name for himself at Anfield.

Benitez already has to contend with the loss of Steven Gerrard, who sustained a shin injury while on England duty, for the visit of Blackburn on Saturday.
