Rafa Benitez has challenged Harry Kewell to prove he has the hunger to be a success at Liverpool.

Kewell has endured an injury-hit two years at Anfield since joining from Leeds United and has not played for the club this season.

The Australia international is on the comeback trail after a hernia operation and is still trying to win over the die-hard Liverpool faithful.

His early exit from the UEFA Champions League final due to injury did not endear him to Reds fans, who have questioned whether Kewell has the desire to play for the club.

Reds boss Benitez is confident Kewell can regain the form which made him a key figure at Leeds but concedes the 27-year-old must show an appetite to succeed.

"If we use him little by little he can find his way back but he must also be hungry to succeed," said Benitez.

"That's important, too."

Kewell is due to play in Australia's friendly against Jamaica this weekend as he closes in on a first-team return for Liverpool.

Benitez admits his team need the quality of service that Kewell can provide and he is looking forward to having the SocceRoo available for selection.

"Every day he is feeling a bit better," added Benitez. "He's away with Australia this weekend and then we'll have to see if he can be involved against Blackburn.

"It may be too soon but we'll have to wait and see.

"Harry is a fantastic player and we need him. I want him doing what he's capable of, beating defenders and getting plenty of crosses into the box.

"When he's back with us it'll be like signing a new player. He is a different kind of player to what we have."
