Liverpool defender Djimi Traore has added to Rafa Benitez's injury list as a thigh problem has ruled him out for the trips to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen.

The French defender limped out of The Reds' Carling Cup defeat in Cardiff with a thigh injury, and that has now ruled him out of the visit to St James' Park.

It is not known how long Traore will be forced to sit on the sidelines, but he will also miss the club's crucial UEFA Champions League second leg in Germany against Leverkusen.

"We don't know yet how long Traore will be out for, but he won't be playing tomorrow (Saturday)," said Benitez.

"I need to speak with the doctor to talk about the situation and then I will have a better idea about the injury.

"We have a number of players with kicks and bruises since last weekend and at the moment I'm waiting to see how many of them will be fit for this weekend's match."

Traore has improved of late and the loss is a blow to Benitez who has a number of other problems in the build-up to two massive games.

Jerzy Dudek has a gashed shin and young Scott Carson may make his debut at Newcastle, while Harry Kewell and Dietmar Hamann are also struggling.
