Anfield ace gets new deal

Liverpool midfielder John Welsh has signed a new contract with the club.

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes during the Merseysiders' FA Cup third round defeat at Burnley in midweek.

However, he has finished the week on a high after penning a new two-and-a-half year contract at Anfield.

The England Under-21 international has clearly done much to impress Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

"I have grown up at the club and spent my entire career here," he told the Stellar Group website.

"So it gives me great pleasure to sign a new contract allowing me to continue my progress.

"Now I need to work hard and try to force my way into the first team on a more regular basis, but, with the club moving in the right direction and my future secured, I am really optimistic about the next few seasons."
