Marseille may look to Gregory Vignal as they strive to replace Bixente Lizarazu.

Following the veteran full back's return to Bayern Munich, l'OM have a couple of names on their hit-list.

Vignal is believed to be one of them even though the 23-year-old is currently on loan to Rangers from Liverpool.

Former Marseille defender Manuel Dos Santos, who joined Benfica last summer, is another candidate.

Lizarazu, meanwhile, has explained why he went back to Germany.

"Perhaps I will go on an adventure next season with Bayern," the 35-year-old told L'Equipe.

"But one thing is for sure, only the pitch will make the decision. There is no need to talk.

"In France, age is a permanent question. In Germany, only performance is important.

"Now I am leaving Marseille and I am in a hurry to quit.

"Bayern give me a true aim, a concrete sporting destiny.

"During the last few weeks, I went to training sessions without really knowing why, without knowing anything about the coach's ideas, without understanding his choices.

"The relationship between a player and a coach is essential; a major matter. Either it allows you to give your best or you really need to leave quickly. If not, everything becomes more complex and stagnates."

Lizarazu has signed a six-month contract with Bayern and is not thinking about retirement.

"Now one thing is for sure," he explained. "I will close the door.

"I will decide the moment for me to stop my career."
