Cortes unhappy with Reds blow

Mallorca's David Cortes is upset he did not join Liverpool.

Real Mallorca defender David Cortes is upset that his proposed move to Liverpool fell through at the last minute.

Cortes looked to be joining the growing Spanish contingent at Anfield but a move failed to materialise as the transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was all geared up to join Rafa Benitez's side before the collapse of the move, and he is bitterly disappointed.

Cortes said that he believes Liverpool needed to sell one or two players to make space for him in the squad, and is angry The Reds failed to do that before expressing their interest in him.

"Liverpool put the candy very close in front of me. It was a pretty opportunity, but for reasons that I will never know, I will stay here," said Cortes.

"If they had to get rid of two players, then they should not have contacted me.

"They put the candy so close to you, but it has happened now. I am very happy to stay here.

"I will not let this get into my head between now and December. I have had pre-season here and now I must concentrate on playing for Mallorca.

"It is positive that all these people talk about you, but I must play in Mallorca and that is that."

Benitez may rekindle his interest in the stopper during the January window.
