Cheyrou is likely to leave Anfield during the summer and a season-long loan to Stade Velodrome looks the probable outcome.
L'OM coach Jose Anigo admitted earlier in the week that negotiations are progressing smoothly and that viewpoint has been backed up by the club's chairman Christophe Bouchet.
He acknowledges nothing has yet been signed but revealed discussions regarding a loan deal for Cheyrou are heading in the right direction.
"We are moving forwards on a loan deal even if nothing has been signed," Bouchet told AFP.
Marseille are also keen on Cheyrou's Anfield team-mate Djimi Traore, whose former agent Pape Diouf is now the French side's sporting director.
Diouf mentioned a deal for Traore during the contact for Cheyrou but it appears West Brom still remain favourites to sign the defender.
Veteran full back Bixente Lizarazu is still an option for l'OM while they are also striving to strike an accord with Steve Marlet.
The France international spent last season on loan on the South Coast and wants to cancel his Fulham contract to pen a two-year deal with l'OM.
Other attacking options for coach Anigo are Ajaccio striker Mamadou Bagayoko and Czech Republic ace Marek Heinz, who has interested Premiership duo Everton and Portsmouth.
Meanwhile, l'OM starlet Mathieu Flamini has yet to ink his first professional contract with the club due to a deadlock in talks over his wages.
In addition, Flamini wants assurances that he can be loaned out midway through next season if he is not involved in the first team on a regular basis.
The impasse in talks could prompt Everton to revive their interest in Flamini following recent rumours they offered the midfielder a four-year contract.
