Chris Kirkland has admitted that he has come through a tough few months, and is now looking to earn a place in England's Euro 2004 squad.

The Liverpool keeper has been handed a new deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2009, and is keen to repay manager Gerard Houllier's faith in him.

"The last few months have been very hard," admitted Kirkland.

"I had a good pre-season after coming back from injury and then I picked up a groin strain playing for the England Under-21s.

"I was only warming up and got really down after that.

"Now my ambition is to get into the England squad for Euro 2004.

"But if I don't make that then, hopefully, I've got time to go to plenty more finals with England."
