Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has admitted he faces a battle to fight his way back into the England set-up.

The former Coventry shot-stopper was a surprise inclusion in the squad for August's friendly with Croatia, but his hopes of becoming first choice at Liverpool suffered a blow when he picked up a groin strain last month.

Kirkland has just returned to action and he knows that he needs to be playing regularly to catch the eye of England coach Sven Goran Eriksson.

"You would have to ask Sven Goran Eriksson whether I need to be playing first team football before I play for England," said Kirkland.

"But I think playing helps your case a lot.

The 22-year-old admitted he was surprised to be called into the England squad in August.

"I was surprised to be in the England squad earlier this season - but hopefully it will come round again."
