The Australian international has been in Switzerland, training with his new Reds team-mates, and will face Cologne in a friendly on Wednesday.
Despite the controversy surrounding his cut-price move from Leeds, Kewell is ready to get down to the real business of playing football - and has the backing of his new boss.
"Harry is ready to play," said Houllier. "He has settled very well into training. He looks like he is a very good trainer and you can see how much he enjoys his football.
"I will be playing him against Cologne. Everyone here should get a chance at some point. I expect to play a different team in each half but I haven't decided the line-ups yet."
Kewell has already been making an impression during training and Liverpool legend Ian Rush - now a coach with the club - is one of those who is impressed with Kewell's ability.
"I had the pleasure of watching Harry Kewell train alongside his new Liverpool team-mates over the weekend," said Rush.
"He is something special. He has matured a lot since I last worked with him on the training ground during my time at Leeds.
"And he has the best left foot I have seen for a very long time. He ranks alongside players like Ray Kennedy and Kevin Sheedy with his ability, but he has more pace than that duo.
"He can beat players and score goals. In short, he is a fantastic signing."
Fellow new signing Steve Finnan is also due to make his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt against the German side, although most eyes will be on Kewell.
