The teenage striker will complete a move to Anfield in the summer along with Le Havre team-mate Anthony Le Tallec.
Reds boss Gerard Houllier does not deem the 18-year-old to yet be ready for the rigours of The Premiership and wants to dispatch the forward back to France on a season-long loan deal.
Le Havre had been keen to keep Sinama-Pongolle and Le Tallec for a further 12 months but their relegation from Le Championnat is likely to scupper their hopes.
Sinama-Pongolle, who scored five goals in 31 league appearances for Le Havre last term, has now caught the attention of Lens.
The French outfit's sporting director Patrice Bergues was previously assistant manager to Houllier on Merseyside and may use his links to obtain the services of Sinama-Pongolle.
This relationship was deployed to good effect last summer when Liverpool signed Senegalese forward El Hadji Diouf from Lens.
