LIVERPOOL have confirmed they are in negotiations to capture Lille midfielder Bruno Cheyrou.

The 23-year-old was watched by Reds boss Gerard Houllier over the weekend during Lille's clash with Paris Saint Germain.

Reports in the French press had claimed that a £4 million deal to sign Cheyrou was on the brink of completion.

However, while Liverpool acknowledged discussions had commenced, they were not yet on the cusp of adding the Frenchman to their Anfield ranks.

"Liverpool Football Club have held talks with Lille about Bruno Cheyrou. Discussions will continue between the two parties," said a club spokesman.

Cheyrou's brother Benoit has also been linked with a summer switch to Merseyside with the defensive midfielder likely to cost a fraction of his sibling's fee if Houllier presses ahead with the move.
