Gomes is almost certain to leave struggling Fiorentina at the end of the season, with the Serie A club still struggling for financial stability.
Indeed with the likelihood of relegation also hanging over the club and new president Ugo Poggi already threatening to quit his post, the problems at Artemio Franchi show no sign of abating.
Gomes, who was bought to the club for a fee of around £12 million, remains a major saleable asset and will not be keen to drop down with the club should they fail to pull themselves out of the relegation quagmire.
Liverpool have cast an eye over the Euro 2000 star several times in the past year, but it now appears that Spurs are ready to enter talks with Fiorentina over signing the 24-year-old.
The major hitch to any deal, beyond The Viola's desire to make their money back on the man they brought in to to replace legendary Gabriel Batistuta, appears to be the player himself.
Gomes, who despite being flattered by Liverpool's interest had admitted that the English climate would not suit him, seems more likely to look for a club that he feels has a real chance of challenging both in Europe and domestically.
