LIVERPOOL have recalled Steve Staunton from his loan spell at Crystal Palace to shore up the defence for the Uefa Cup tie with Olympiakos on Thursday night, whilst Rigobert Song is expected to join West Ham.

The 31-year-old left back was allowed to go to Palace on an indefinite loan at the end of October, and was expected to be allowed to leave Anfield on a free transfer before the end of the season.

However, the injury to Christian Zeige has seen manager Gerard Houllier short of cover on the left, and Staunton has now flown to Greece to take his place in the squad for the game.

Meanwhile, Song is expected to take a £2.5 million transfer to West Ham on Thursday, with the London club moving immediately to replace Rio Ferdinand, who is on the brink of joining Leeds.

The 24-year-old Cameroonian has lost his place in The Reds' side in recent months, making only four appearances this season so far.

He is believed to have returned from Greece to discuss personal terms over the move with Hammers manager Harry Redknapp, and will see the move as a chance to regain regular first team football.
