LEVERKUSEN ON SONG

BUNDESLIGA side Bayer Leverkusen are believed to be stepping up their interest in Liverpool defender Rigobert Song.

The Cameroon international has been unable to ensure first team football at Anfield since his £2.7 million transfer from Italian side Salernitana, and has been linked with a number of sides in recent weeks, including Celtic, Marseille and Paris St Germain.

Song has been re-assured by the German side that he will be used in his preffered role as centre back next season, should he move there in the summer.

Reds manager Gerard Houllier is believed to be asking for around £3.5 million for the 24-year-old, who he had originally hoped would have fitted in better to the team and solve the defensive problems that have plagued Liverpool in recent seasons.

The scheduled arrival of Marcus Babbel at Anfield next season has fuelled speculation that Song is now surplus to requirements on Merseyside.
